The HBCU-Pro Sports Media Association has named the Florida A&M its Major Division National Champion and Benedict College its Mid-Major Division National Champion for the 2023 football season.  Their selections as National Champions were unanimous choices by the 20 voters of the 50 member association, receiving 200 points each.

The Rattlers of Florida A&M are HBCU-PSMA  Black College National Football Champions finishing atop the Major Division with a 12-1 record , 20 first place votes and 200 points. Coach Willie Simmons and his SWAC champions were followed by North Carolina Central which finished with 173 points, Howard University with 151 points, Alcorn State with 127 points and Prairie View A&M rounding out the top five with 112 points.   Alabama State, Jackson State, Southern University, Tennessee State and Hampton University complete this season’s top ten of the Major Division.

 

Meanwhile, Coach Chennis Berry and his Tigers of Benedict College are the HBCU-PSMA Mid-Major National Black College Champions. The Purple and Gold from South Carolina held onto the number one spot the entire season and closed out with 20 first place votes and 200 points. The SIAC champs were followed by Virginia Union, Fort Valley State, Fayetteville State, Virginia State, Miles College, Tuskegee University, Johnson C Smith, Albany State and Allen University rounding out the top ten of the Mid-Major Division.

Pollsters comprise a cross-section of HBCU media members, including eight different media organizations. These voters cover all four HBCU football-playing conferences, along with HBCU conference independents, and reside in 12 different states.

The HBCU-PSMA

Established in 2021, the HBCU-Pro Sports Media Association is an organization of professionals providing multimedia coverage of Historically Black College and University sports, as well as professional sports.

The purpose of the association is to transform and empower the culture of media by providing informative broadcast stories, rich contextual reporting and inspirational photography of the marginalized by educating, inspiring, and informing a global community.
