Well before the multimedia explosion of the 21st century, African-American sports journalism (the collection, preparation, and distribution of news and related commentary) was confined primarily to newspapers, magazines, books and to a lessor extent, radio and television.

Historically Black newspapers based in cities like Chicago (the Defender), Philadelphia (the Tribune), Pittsburgh (Courier), Baltimore (Afro-American), Atlanta (Daily World), New York (Amsterdam News) and Los Angeles (Sentinel) were some of the only newspapers reporting on HBCU athletic happenings as well as Blacks in professional sports such as Negro League baseball.

Highly regarded journalists came from those newspapers and became well known for their reporting of news and events that didn’t make the pages of “mainstream” papers. In many cases, the impact of their offerings extended far beyond newsprint or air waves and some were quite influential in the re-integration of both baseball and football.
