
South Carolina State Univerity, under head coach Chennis Berry, winner of the last two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football championships as well as the most recent Celebration Bowl, received the most votes to claim the number one spot in the 2026 HBCU-Pro Sports Media Association Major Division Preseason Football Poll. The Hornets of Alabama State claimed the second spot with Jackson State securing the third spot. Prairie View A&M and North Carolina Central round out the Major Division top five.

Meanwhile, 2025 CIAA runners-up Virginia Union University, under the leadership of Dr. Alvin Parker Jr, nabbed the top of the Mid-Major Division. Johnson C. Smith University claimed the second spot, while Benedict College received the third most votes from the voting panel. Albany State University and Edward Waters University round out the top five of the Mid-Majors.
